So there the corpse explosion cantrip went
https://baldursgate3.wiki.fextralife.com/Bursting+Sinew
It seems its replacing Chill Touch? Was it that little used?

Explode a corpse, causing it to impale those around it.
But judging from the description, I am wondering, is it actually an aoe cantrip?

Yes, it's an AoE.

I usually take chill touch on many of my characters. I don't use it a lot, but it is sometimes handy to apply bone chill and prevent healing.

I'm not sure this would be an upgrade. First of all it seems to be conditional on there being a corpse nearby, and secondly it seems likely to cause friendly fire in many situations.

I play with a mod called Valkrana's Necromancy Spells. It has a spell called Corpse Grenade. Does exactly what this spell Larian is putting in does (makes me feel like they probably lifted it from Valkrana to be honest but tweaked it, and weakened it). I rarely use Corpse Grenade because of the friendly fire since it's a Necromancy spell, it does not benefit from Evocation Wizards Feature. Very situational of a corpse being around.

It can be good if you carry around a bunch of dead rats. The cantrip can target the same corpse twice or thrice if you have the Gemini Gloves. However, carrying around rats is a ton of action economy for a cantrip unless you have Mage Hand that can yet rats for you.

EDIT: Nvm, I forgot Larian had Corpse Explosion in DOS2. I wonder if they will allow us to target our own undead with Corpse Explosion just like in DOS2. If that is the case then the Cantrip is better than expected.

If anything it was inspired by the necromancer in Diablo 2. Whom popularized the idea.

Seems to also have the benefit of the twin casting inherent to this cleric subclass which is alright. But I think it's a dex save which is meh. Still, it's a cantrip you can use to situationally do some decent AOE damage if it goes off. Toll the dead is a much better action though generally.

Corpse explosion is stupid.

they both do different things, why would it replace bone chill?

Back in the 1990s when I was playing Myth 2, the undead wights would explode. Just saying.

I hope Chill touch isn't going anywhere, it's one of my favorites. Also, I wouldn't put too much stock on Fextra, wouldn't be surprised if this was just a mistake and never got corrected. The site is notorious for having false information.

Edit. https://bg3.wiki/wiki/List_of_Wizard_spells Chill touch is still listed here and I trust this site a whole lot more than Fextra.
