Baldur's Gate 3
I'm getting destroyed because my team are always in the worst position when combat is triggered.
I'm playing on balanced mode but because I've never played the game before I don't know where enemies are so I'm always getting caught in terrible positions. Like my guys will all be bunched up and get aoe'd or my ranged guys will be on ground level instead of up high.

And my melee guys will be far away and I need 2 turns just to get into melee range etc.

When playing the game, are you meant to control each character individually and take things slow or are you meant to used linked group and just stick together and then get into position once combat is triggered?

Balanced mode is faceroll. It's impossible you get destroyed unless you build your team in the most worse way possible (actually, not even then) or you are in a zone much higher than your level (this is more likely your issue)
Check level zones in the game steam guides, do not move in new zones if you are underleveled. Keep this rule in mind and you can go fight naked and faceroll the game

I don't think I'm under levelled for the area I'm in. I'm in the beach area right after the first intro part on the ship. I took a turn and my attack missed and the enemy literally 1 shot one of my characters and downed him. I think I just need to learn how to play the game rather than just running in without much care.

if you are on a harder difficulty than 'balanced' this is, and I am not joking, one of the hardest fights in the game. You are low level with no gear, and they are over powered on higher difficulty -- you have to sneak past them or blow them up with a barrel or really know your stuff to deal with it (there are spells and builds that can do it and luck helps).
You should be level 2 if you killed anything on the ship's last fight, but maybe you didn't. Using the barrels on the mind flayer = level 2 if you get the killing blow. The demons are not worth killing or even fighting.

even on balanced a low health character or a critical hit will down you with those guys.
They are set up so you can kill one outright and 2 if you are patient with the barrel (one of them is all but tap dancing on it to tell you to use it). Shadowheart's racial fire spell can light it from afar in stealth. Getting 2 of them, one will patrol over to the other at least once time. If you had a spare barrel from the ship, you can use that too. If you just can't handle it, sneak past them, carefully, and come back with a full team of 4 to get the goodies they guard (minor but void bulbs are PRICELESS, and having just a handful in key fights is very useful).

Or you can skip that fight for now by jumping on the ledge before this encounter. Next would be to recruit Astarion, Gale (or Lae'zel) which are not far away. With a party of 4, it should be piece of cake.
