In the video he's using multiple Booming Blades due to Bloodlust Elixir and Haste or extra actions + Extra Attack (possibly more on that below). If you look at Booming Blade's description it's a "melee" action.
He's basically spamming it in the video one shotting the mostly easy enemies. :)
That said, it may all be just Extra Actions and the cantrip is counting as a full action every use. Which is why he may not see the "Improved Extra Attack" mechanics, if it's implemented, because he keeps using Booming Blade cantrip.
So it may easily work as you say and like other cantrips. :)
And yeah one of the reasons I want to go Durge with Hexblade is for the Durge Invis Cloak, The Deathstalker's Mantle, for invis on kill once per turn which mechanically is awesome but also fits the aesthetics of Hexcbade perfectly. :)
Of course using Darkness party combat strategy mixed in with Shadow Blade possibly. At least early on. I do like my Glaives and Polearm Master for Darkness since enemies run around so much within it. :p
Asterion is definitely multiclassing into Hexblade too.
Meaning it likely knocks down Humans and Half-Elves a peg or two for being the best Gish Warlocks and instead, makes pure Elves and other races with special bonuses more optimal.
The Martial Proficiency is somewhat redundant though, except for your offhand if you have one (you still get proficiency by binding hex weapon).

What I don't understand yet is whether or not Hexblade Curse applied by the bound Hexblade weapon by chance, can only apply curse once per short rest, or if that recharge only applies to the actual usable Hexblade Curse ability.
