If the purpose has always been to engineer an easily controllable species of thralls (to feed upon and send to combat), they demonstrated a very poor ability to control their own experiments.

It mentions a race of beings called the githyanki. This name was taken from the novel for use with a much different race in the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons game.
