Instakill traps are unfair
Bear with me as I vent my frustrations a little bit. I've been doing a blind honour run and I've just had a TPK due to a Dawnbreaker knocking my entire party off the map.

I didn't know what they did, as it's my first time playing. As I approached the 1st Dawnbreaker, the game went into turn-based mode and I had Astarion disable it.

I saw the 2nd one and went to disable it too (I was careless), as I reached it, the game opened the roll screen for the sleight of hand check, but didn't go into turn-based mode. As a result of that, the entire party was knocked off while I was still rolling.

While I realize it was mostly my fault, jank like this is what frustrates me in Larian games. Not only I can't imagine any official DnD campaing hosting this kind of insta TPK trap, I definitevely can't imagine it happening BEFORE any player has a chance to roll.

End of rant, sorry for bothering you.

So, the game warns you that you need to be in Turn-Based mode to deal with the traps. You do not go into Turn-Based mode to continue dealing with the traps therefore its jank? Going into Turn-Based mode is HOW you get the chance to make your roll as it pauses the round to allow turn order. Round not paused, it elapses in 6 second intervals.
Yeah, I seen a few people who knew those were coming still lose runs to them.

Sometimes it be like that.
Now you know.
I wish there were more.
It's not poor game design that the traps are instakill. What is poor game design is that it doesn't automatically pause or enter turn-based mode when a trap is detected, which is a feature that people were already programming into games at least as early as 1999 (e.g. JA2 automatically paused when any of your mercenaries spotted a mine or other trap).

and this, my dude, is why honor mode playthroughts must be done once you know what to do (finish the game at least once with another difficulty)... even if the traps wouldn't have killed you, someone else probably would have did it... (bosses have legendary skills, and some of those skills are ridicolously strong)

It's interesting. The Dawnbreakers don't actually do that much damage.

https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Dawnbreaker

Why they are deadly is not so much the damage they do (1d6 radiant damage) but because the conical force wave has knockback, which can push characters into a chasm below.

You do appear to get a CON save against this effect.
If you're doing a 'blind honour run' you deserve to get TPK'd every single time.
i mean..... blind honour mode....... lol

Lol. Good point. And I agree. Player's should know that playing the game at the hardest setting and only having a single save, is a risky adventure.

Besides, the game is not flawless and ♥♥♥♥ happens.
Traps in general in this game are poorly implemented.

It's not a TPK trap if you do the smart thing and leave your party behind where it's relatively safe. That's just common sense in D&D, and absolutely mirrors tabletop.

D&D tabletop is full of instakill traps that can indeed wipe the whole party if they do something incredibly stupid like all huddle around the thief as they try to disarm a known trap.

If you wanted fair you shouldn't have started on honor mode, full stop.

As someone who has hundreds and hundreds of hours in BG and BG2 the way BG3 doesn't have actual in-game pause is a so damn annoying. It's even worse that you can't setup the game to enter turn-based mode when you see a trap. Several times I've spotted a trap and stepped right on it as it appeared. Even if the game doesn't want ro have something as basic as pause how about letting us at least have characters totally freeze as soon as one of them spots a trap?

sorry to hear you lost your team. Now you know... and sadly this is one of only a very, very small number of traps that actually matter. Most of them you can walk over with impunity, but this one is nasty. I can't even think of another trap that was actually dangerous, most just do nuisance damage. Another very nasty one is a minor fire trap on a chest that is sitting next to explosive barrels.

The game may have great graphics and voice acting but the QoL and UI leave much to be desired. Sucks that OP's run got ended with a TPK- I can see the appeal of doing a blind honor run as it emulates the tabletop experience more closely.
