Baldur's Gate 3

Must have mods for a first playthrough
Going to start soon, what are the best mods that improve the game slightly but don't significantly change gameplay or change the content? Things like improved visuals, improved UI, QoL, stuff like that.

For example, Pathfinder has a near little mod that changes the weapon focus feats so that they apply to a category of weapons instead of a single weapon so you no longer have to be psychic when picking what to specialize on (yay!).

Playable Kua Toa for your guardian. Makes the cut scenes much funnier when fish eyes is staring you down.

Take the "Really Shadowheart" mod. It changes the ending of your romance story with her so that she may be pregnant with your child, and you can propose marriage to her. The author actually argues it's a better and "more authentic" ending for her romance with Tav.

What in the absolute nine hells did you just have me read? The ♥♥♥♥ is wrong with you?

The author of the mod, not the poster says that

Oh I am aware the poster isn't the author, but the poster brought the authors nonsense to us. Equally to blame LOL

I wasn't aware of this "Really SH" mod until someone mentioned it on our forums just recently. (Well, they didn't say the name of the mod, but I found the one they were talking about.)

To be clear, I certainly wouldn't use it, nor suggest it as a mod for anybody else. (That said, anyone else who wants to is free to use it. It's their game.) I have looked at mods that possibly alter the storyline ... but have no interest in that one.

I have romanced Shadowheart, and the ending & epilogue leaves open the question of how long term your commitment will be, and you are free to headcanon if that means marriage to SH two weeks later. I don't need a mod to watch me propose to her onscreen, or discuss having children (bio ones if you are male, and presumably, both of you are fertile). It's certainly a possibility your romance ending leaves open also.

If you need a mod to see these discussions onscreen rather than in your imagination, that's fine. I have no real interest in it.

the only mod you do need if it ever gets made, is toggle world info. as of now you have to press and hold to show intractables. in larions previous games, dos1/2 you did not have to do this at all. also a mod that changes the ui to be the same as dos1/2 would be ideal controller side. controller ui for bg3 now is poop

Ok I dont agree with most that the first playthru should be raw.
mods for first play for me are all quality of life, like https://www.nexusmods.com/baldursgate3/mods/2417
highly suggest.

After your first play thru there are some I like but for first play thru these two I suggest.
Unless you want cheats for money and such.

No mods first play through. Go slow and explore everything.
Probably tired of hearing it, but the serious answer for a first time playthrough is literally "none". At least get a feel for the vanilla game before you start modding. Honestly, there are no "must have" mods at all, it's all catering to personal preferences.

Please don't - not for the first run. Mod how you want in the next one but this game deserves to be played how it was intended at least once.

I honestly feel like the game doesn't really need mods, it's actually a really good game by default for the most part.

Also, just FYI, most mods will probably be outdated as soon as the final patch drops early this year so I'd set your game not to auto-update if you want to finish your first campaign, just in case it runs longer than you expect. There's no telling how long it will take modders to update, if they ever do.

Last thing, if you plan on doing any multiplayer I'd just stay away from mods for now. It's absolutely possible to set up a game with mods, it's easy enough, but everyone has to know a bit more than just hitting 'download' to get it going and you'll definitely want to use an outside mod manager that can change load order to make it work.

I have never felt a "need" to use mods. Even after 2000+ hrs and 9 game ending play runs. So not only do I not feel there are "must have" ones for a first play run, I don't feel there is any need to use any......ever.

The game is a Masterpiece as is without mods. It's not flawless. But damn near.

The one I must have is the one that hides your hot bar until you move your mouse all the way down, similar to hiding the task bar in Windows. The less clutter in the UI, the more space there is to actually see the world around you.

Camera is annoying sometimes. Try it for yourself, personally prefer free camera. It can do exploring a little bit easier than intended, cause you can see some extra paths without reaching an elevate point, but in your first play i doubt you will notice them anyways.

Looks like mods are a must right from the start.
The very first action is a skill check.
It's a die roll instead of a threshold comparison, it follows the current trend of 40 years UI regression, of confusing tabletops with computers.
I don't see an option to turn the mere gambling game this design bug produced into an actual CRPG, yet I avoid mods as much as possible, I would endure constant reloads as a workaround.
However, this UI is so bad that it also shows the dice, and the rolls, and asks for clicks in a dedicated popup.
I'm just flabbergasted.
If I can't find a toggle to turn off this ridiculous crap either, I really hope that Nexus has a fix.
And that's after one minute in game. One. It's not a loss of optimism, it's a nosedive.
