Apostle of Myrkul Honor mode
I severly underestimated how annoying getting my main melee dps character fear-locked was gonna be. Had to drink an invis potion just to get him into melee range.

Managed to win after an extremely long combat. Just had every party member chug non-stop potions every turn (And some tossing potions to splash two people). While using magic missile to bait the legendary action and apply radiant orb.

I'm so glad that myrkul will only spawn 1 skeleton per round after a while, allowing my monk to solo dps the guy.

The only way I'm able to really deal with some of the boss fights is using Darkness cheese. Especially if there's a warlock in the party.
You can avoid the fear problem by using the spell "calm emotions". Or by drinking an elixir of heroism (one of the more powerful elixirs in the game). Or even just by having a level 10 paladin nearby.

You can also stop the Apostle's healing with Bone Chill. The "doomhammer" maul is especially valuable, because it is a damage type the Apostle does not resist, and it is pretty much a guaranteed application of Bone Chill. Even if you miss you can use the "tenacity" reaction to hit, and that applies the Bone Chill.

Once the Apostle is Bone Chilled, the necromites will still rush up there and sacrifice themselves, but it fails to apply the heal. It actually helps you get rid of them.

This is an anoying fight.

Here is my key tactics:
1) Wizard with fire balls and/or ice storm for the necromites. Main job is to to keep these numbers under control. Give him Elixir of Bloodlust for the frequent extra action.
2) Two melee for hammering the big guy.
3) Bone Chill and Arrow of Ilmater to keep the avatar from healing.
4) Everyone should have flying potion and fear protection scrolls.
5) Start with surprise so you can free aylin and kill the Illithid right away.
6) Ignore aylin after she is freed. She is pretty worthless.
7) Also, I use a cleric to keep everyone healthy and for misc tasks

Hit him with Water bottles. Blast him with Cold/Lightning spells. Place darkness on top of him. Laugh at Myrkul being blinded.
Globe of Invulnerability makes you invincible, but not him.

How do you get this spell so early in the game?

This is my favorite tactic. You can take 2/3 of the Apostle's HP away in one hit with wet + Gale having Luck of the Far Realms and an upleveled witch bolt. In HM, no less.

Scrolls. They show up quite a bit at Roah and I think the Quartermaster.
Generally speaking, when you reach 9th (character) level, then merchants can start carrying 6th (spell) level scrolls.

Right, but what I meant was, how do you get that high in level by then? I usually only get to 7 or 8.

I'm generally level 9 going into the illithid colony, and level 10 by the time I fight Myrkul.
He ruined several good runs for me until I figured out my mostly cheese method that works for me as long as i feel like farming long rest merchants to buy the little smoke bombs.

Myrkul tips:
- For meelee/throwers use blunt weapons, he's not resistant to that. His eggs/skeletons are weak to it.
- For your archer, use the hand crossbow that does force damage instead of piercing (bought from the halfling merchant in Moonrise towers).
- Have a cleric that casts Calm emotion on the whole group to avoid fear.
- Have a caster that can use ice storm to deal with the skeletons early.
- A neat trick is to try and hit Myrkul with a slow spell (use hat of fire acuity+scorching ray during Thorm fight and afterwards slow when Myrkul shows up).
- Ensure to hit him with an acid arrow to lower his ac by 2.
- Ensure to take out the mindflayer at highest prio to avoid stuns.

I have killed him many times in Honor mode at lvl 8 using the tips above without using any cheese.
