But what does this video series tell us about historical evocation spells? Inquiring minds have to know, unless this series is in reference to planet Earth history. This can't be About forgotten realms, I heard that was imaginary.

Yes, he's right historically. No, he's not right for D&D where they call the armor studded leather.

My understanding has been that the existence of studded leather in DnD comes from a fundamental misunderstanding by Gygax regarding how brigandine worked.

My understanding is also that it's decently heavy armor, making it unsuitable to fit the DnD mechanical niche that studded leather currently holds.

I mean, that's exactly the point.

Heh, I can see studded leather actually being something that would be worn to mimic the appearance of brigandine armor. So a noble who didn't wish to carry the weight associated with his brigandine could have it copied in leather and wear it when in locations they believed themselves unlikely to need the protection of a set of brigandine armor but still needs the appearance and prestige that wearing it would engender, such as court functions.
Obversely, a highwayman could don studded leather and appear to be outfitted in brigandine which would give the illusion of a much sturdier set of armor.

While I don't see how this really impacts BG3, I could see DMs using this information to mislead a party into thinking an enemy appears to be in light armor when in actuality they are wearing medium armor. Cost wise this could be a game changer. Enemies outfitted in brigandine are likely to be better equipped and have access to better resources then enemies in studded leather.

Brigandine armor is, or was considered medium armor in D&D. Not sure if it was abandoned in later additions, but it used to be a separate option, so it isn't the same thing as studded leather in D&D.
