Need another example? In the Time of Troubles he realized that he would be murdered so he...got busy. Implanting part of his essence into numerous children, and he would collect the essence back when they died. However he was impatient. Instead of imbuing them with his will he gave them a desire to kill each other.... Oh, and his high priestess in charge of making sure he was revived in this affair tried to back stabbed him instead.
I think that the reason is, "they do not believe you are the true chosen of Bhaal" basically, they think you're lying about your status and still follow the previous leader.
This is not uncommon for people to do, especially religious and/or political fanatics.
If suddenly their world view is challenged, they may double down on what they believe and attack you. Ergo, they are like: "No! You are NOT the chosen and you murdered our leader Orin! HERESY!"
Or something like that.
That's how I took it.
