Cistern Puzzle

Who at Larian thought this was a good idea? I've spent hours on it, and it seems to be completely random. Most of the time the "Raise water level" control doesn't work, and even when it does I haven't been able to get the level above 2 in the last several hours.
Does anyone have a solution to this? If not my game is over right here.

I'll be honest. I've always done it with the Strength check option. Have Karlach Rage (or cast Enhance Ability, whatever else improves Athletics, pick your poison) and use the left most lever (doesn't have a gauge above it).

You can just let the thing explode. Still opens the door.

Luckily for you, there are alternative solutions to the puzzle, such as what's been mentioned here.

I always struggled with it and seem to randomly get it right. I haven't done it for a long time because i enter through the flower garden nowadays.
