Cant join friends campaign due to gustav dev error
I can't seem to join a friends game due to an apparent "gustav error". Even after doing a clean install and verifying my game files within steam, I still have had little success. This issue has occurred before with the same friend, but it was remedied by a fresh install. During my first playthrough, I attempted to install a mod that would allow me to swap classes from oathbreaker paladin, but I deleted it shortly after. Is there anything I can do?

Did you check if you guys are both playing on the exact same version number?
Performed a file verification on Steam, and cleared Steam cache with a fresh PC restart ?

With NO mods installed, you and your friend need to synchronize your modsettings.lsx configuration file. Easiest way to do this is to just delete the file (back up first, of course), then start the game. The default file will be recreated and they should match.

It is located here:

C:\Users\YOURNAME\AppData\Local\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\PlayerProfiles\Public

Good Luck

Unfortunately, neither of those worked. I followed both steps to the best of my ability, even making sure to clean the recycle bin. Nothing seems to work. thanks for y'alls time anyways. Any other ideas what it could be?

Maybe if you give more info someone will have an idea.
For example you did not say which platforms you and the friend are playing on

The problem is that "Gustav Error" is just saying BG3 had an error, but is not giving any info on what.
Does it give any more information? Where does it occur, in the Multiplayer lobby after clicking Join?
Have you tried to join any other random public Lobby to see if the problem occurs with other multiplayer lobbies, or just that one friend?

It would at least rule out some issues. If you can join other lobbies, the problem could be on the friend's side

The direct response from the game upon joining anyone is "connection failed: Mod 'GustavDev' and or its dependencies don't match the server's. this can be caused by corrupt files or files that have been changed."

I have attempted to join other player's lobbies, and I load in but cannot fully join and Im kicked to the menu, upon which I am greeted with the above error. it seems most likely that it is a me problem, but I am not a professional and have no coding background.

It seems to me the problem was the previously installed mod.
You need to not only remove the mod, but go and remove every file form the Mod

Ironwu had mentioned it above, but you might have missed it.

See if this helps:
Copy this and paste it on your windows explorer, or go there manually:
C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\Mods

Make sure that folder is empty, delete all files from mods.
Then go to the mod settings file

here:
C:\Users\samlo\AppData\Local\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\PlayerProfiles\Public
delete the file named
modsettings.lsx

After that do a quick file verification on steam and try launching game see if it's fixed

This worked thank you!

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
