pick shadowheart, command drop commander zhalk pick his weapon with laezel or your tav, bless the mindflayer with spells, it should be easy if mindflayer doesnt misses every attack, if so reload to the beginning
Oh, and before you enter the room you MAY want to place empty chests behind you.
As others said, have Shadowheart cast Command: Drop to get the weapon.
You can cast either Bless or Protection from Good/Evil on Lae'zel (or both with two Clerics) or you can cast Protection from Good/Evil on the Illithid.
Watch the damage Commander Zhalk and the Illithid are dealing to each other.
At a point, retreat the party. Make sure Commander Zhalk is around 30 HP or less. Then have Shadowheart cast Firebolt on one of the tanks. Boom!
If you placed the chests outside it also is possible and more likely to happen that you manage to kill Commander Zhalk in melee, with his own weapon. Just be careful that Lae'zel doesn't get killed or that either the Illithid or the Commander deals the final blow on the other. If you manage to kill Commander Zhalk in melee, you get his armor which isn't special, but gives one more AC than Shadowheart's chain shirt.
Killing both alse nets a nice amount of XP (75 for each Zhalk and the Illithid).
