So.....there is only the one Katana? And....it's not a Katana??
And it isn't a finesse weapon?

There were like five or so Katana in BG2, and they were their own class of weapon, why is there only a single, basic one in BG3, and it is treated like a long sword?

A small gripe, I admit, but I can't help but feel BG3 should have had more types of weapons than BG2......not less (They completely got rid of Bastard Swords, Slings, Darts, and Throwing Knives)

there does certainly seem to be a weapon shortage in the game. even watching videos of people playing, everyone seems to gravitate to the same weapons.

Different system, among the many changes from 2e to 5e were simplified weapon types. An arming dagger, a kukiri, a cindquilla, and a swordbreaker are all mechanically just daggers, and other particulars relegated to roleplay fluff. Same deal with Katana and Longswords.

Animation and appearance wise, the closest thing BG3 has to Katanas are Scimitars. There's a few good ones scattered around, earliest magic one being a drop from the cave gnolls.

There's nothing about how a real katana is used to indicate it should be a finesse weapon.

Yep, hence why in 3.X (the originator of the 'finesse weapon' nonsense) they were mechanically bastard swords. Masterwork by default, but still bastard swords.

In 5e they'd be longswords due to weapon types being folded together, even though both bastard swords/hand and a half swords/long swords and katana were primarily designed for two handed use.

Also aren't katanas more top-heavy than western swords due to not having a proper crossguard?
If anything they'd require more strength than an average western sword of the same weight.

Katana definitely STR based weapon!

It's more forward-weighted yes but not harder to swing than a western sword of the same weight.

How would a big ass 2h sword be a 'finesse' weapon?

Also, was it 1000 times folded? That's the real question.

If it's the one that drops at the Mall kiosk, yes it is.

maybe Wakizashi can be a finesse weapon xD

This discussion is utterly pointless. People who made DnD have never wielded an actual sword in their life.

For example, Rapier being a Dex weapon when it weighs as much as a Longsword because the blade is much thicker so it won't bend when used to stab.

Longsword is also not a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Axe.

Yes, but in DnD Bastard Sword used to be exotic and have higher damage than a Long Sword because, again, the people who made DnD had no real knowledge of swords.

It's also not one handed, but don't tell WoTC that.

And yes, it's 'technically' versatile now, which is still bs.
Longsword Type Sword (two-handed, double-edged) Place of origin Europe
