Baldur's Gate 3

Quasit summon scroll is kind of clever
I found this scroll dozens of hours ago, but never used it because I already had a pact of the chain warlock and could summon a quasit anyway. I got a hint that there was a way to get a permanent quasit summon ability with that scroll if you talked with it afterwards. This would become useful since I wanted to respec and multiclass into bard.

I tried and failed the dialogue a few times. If you talk about the previous owner it leads to a dead end. If instead you point out that it called itself shovel, it says it hates that name and that you can call it anything else, it doesn't care what. It can be renamed to Fork or Basket, but then it disappears forever by the next long rest. If you refuse to rename it and say that Shovel suits it, it surrenders and continues on with the conversation but it ends with you having the ability to resummon it. The successful path through the dialogue seemed arbitrary at first.

Something occurred to me afterwards, though. In Western mythology, a demon's name is extremely important. Demons jealously guard their true names from humans and will offer fake names when introducing themselves. In order to summon a demon, according to Medieval folklore, you need to know its true name. Shovel accidentally told you their real name immediately after summoning and is trying to undo that mistake without drawing too much attention to it. If it can trick you into to screwing up its true name, you can't ever summon it again. As long as you keep referring to them as Shovel, you can keep summoning that particular demon every short rest.

I just thought this was a very clever bit of writing about a demon subtly trying to trick the player into relinquishing power over it. That sounds like a very demon thing to do.

Interesting theory but the thing is, you can just learn the spell if you have a lvl 1 / multiclassed wizzard and in that case you can call it basket and still be able to summon it at will.

So your theory is kinda wrong else it would be able to trick the wizzard too

Not necessarily. A wizard may be able to reverse engineer the true name from the scroll whereas other classes wouldn't know which part of an incantation was the true name.
I summoned it once, renamed it "Fork", and now have it as a permanent summon ability. I did not "learn the spell as a wizard" or do anything but read the scroll and summon it one time.
