If you've never read about them they can seem kinda goofy I guess, but Elder Brains are pretty terrifying in DnD lore. Consider that the danger presented by illithids is psionics, and nothing surpasses the psionic abilities of the Elder Brains.

They have a terrifying stat bloc, yes, but I just find the whole idea a little ridiculous.

Illithids and beholders were just Gygax's way to incorporate Lovecraftian horror into D&D.
