In fact, Larian encourages new players NOT to use an Origin character on the first play through of the game.
Larian encourages people to use Origin stories because many players new to the cRPG genre feel uncomfortable not being handed a proxy character. A lot of potential casual players interested in the game aren't very experienced at roleplaying and need a little handholding in the experience.
Dark Urge isn't that different in that regard. It creates a forcing function for people who can't manage an "evil" run on their own.
Otherwise, make a custom Baldurian Tav or a Lolth-Sworn Drow or a Githyanki and have a great time.
What's a Tav?
"Tav' is just your basic run of the mill player character.
That's untrue, its not an evil run on training wheels. Dark Urge is very much plot related and you'll miss out on a lot of plot points by not going through it. You don't even have to be evil with a Dark Urge playthrough.
Basic non-Durge Tav can experience everything except Durge-specific stories. Other origins are the same way except you're playing from the perspective of the Origin.
However, Durge adds a complication if you're trying to go a purely "nice" playstyle. You will be unwillingly forced into situations that a nice character would never do.
Playing as one, however, means you lose out on that character's banter in camp. Shadowheart suddenly becomes bland and lifeless and has nothing to say because none of the dialogue choices are voiced, which sucks big time because she's fully voiced when she's just a companion.
The Dark Urge is also very much tied to the plot. They helped set the main plot in motion and have personal stakes in it beyond getting the tadpole removed. They're even directly linked to the three antagonists in a very close way. They're far more connected to the plot than any of the origin characters.
Tav warlock never get to see their master unlike Wyll.
Tav wizard never get adorable masterfully voiced monstrosity like Tara who call you her pet.
Laezel and Shadowheart have a ton of content and directly tied to the plot.
Compared to all of that Tav feels bland and boring and out of place.
But it's a matter of taste I guess
No.
