Now I need a Thief !
Astarion turned on me at the Ritual, so I had to kill him. Now I need a Thief, but also want to add Minsc. That would make my party the PC, Jaheira, Lae'Zel, and Minsc. How critical is a Thief?? Do you have to have one? Thanx!

Not really, if you just want to open locked stuff and disable traps. Shadowhearth is decent enough or give Gale the Knock spell.

Asterion is still alive(technically undead) with me and I've been doing fine with shadowhearth with the gloves of dexterity.

You do not need a thief.
Not at all, tbh. Get a spellcaster to cast knock on locked things and it's just as good. Only thing you miss out on is pickpocketing if you enjoyed doing that.

Someone with high DEX and Sleight of Hand proficiency will do. What a Rogue gets on top of that is Reliable Talent (guaranteed to roll at least 10) and Expertise (extra proficiency bonus).

Or you could use a spellcaster, but I like having someone to disarm traps.

Lae'Zel has the Githyanki ability to get proficiency in any skill, so if she's a DEX Fighter, that would be an easy solution.

Minsc is by default a DEX based Ranger, but I don't recall if he has Sleight of Hand by default. As a human you can re-spec it on him, though.

Great Weapon Master is your new thief now. And the occasional Knock.

Knock, knock.

Rangers with city hunting can pick sleight of hand as a proficiency.

Technically you don't need a dedicated thief but it's bloody nuisance not to have one. You will certainly miss Astarian.

For example I've swapped out Asatrian for Jaheira for now because I've just got to the main city and I hear Jaheira has a lot to say about a lot of things there, not least how to retrieve Minsc. But I have to keep going back to camp to swap them back to deal with locks and traps etc.

I could blow doors open with Eldritch Blast, Lae'zel could mash up chests with her spare hammer, I could get Gale and give him Knock but I hate the dude's guts.

But I don't like all that. I like having someone who can just open stuff and disarm stuff with no fuss, no trace and no messing about.

Wow. I didn't know he can turn on you. I thought I'd got the full spectrum of his antics by reloading.

I find it really helps being able to put high wisdom on my sleight of hander to be able to increase his perception to more reliably spot traps, using 8 str, 16 dex, 14 con, 16 wis, 8 int and 12 cha on astarion as a thief. Bards doesnt have the points to spare on wisdom.

You do not need a thief in BG3, like at all.
After I had someone to put in the party instead of Astarion, he never went back in.
Anything you can't open with any other character, you can just cast Knock and be done with it. Traps can be avoided, if for some reason you can't disarm them with a random party member.

I wouldn't recommend that.

Just use a party member that already has high wisdom and Perception proficiency to spot traps, Jaheira perhaps.

There's also some gear that gives you advantage on perception rolls.

How do you disarm 30 DC traps without someone with Expertise?

How many DC30 traps are there?

Anyway, any DC30 skill check isn't really meant to be passed. There will always be some other way to deal with it. (Either that, or it's something you are actually meant to fail at.)

Or just save scum until you roll a 20.
