You don't need it, but it can be very powerful.
Healing spells almost seems useless when you have enough healing potions to throw.
Poisons & co are free damages/effects.
Potions preserves your spells/scrolls
...
Sure you don't need it in a standard game, but if you go for an hard run (example high difficulty or very "weak" builds) it can be amazing.
*stops laughing* "...so much effort.." .....Wait...You're SERIOUS?
But it was definitely helpful to craft extras of my elixirs of choice, though I probably could have made due with some other elixir in the same situation.
Eh, maybe on tactician. On balanced, I use mainly healing potions (once my paladin or cleric runs out of heal slots), and bombs (when I remember that I have them).
