My advice is to treat him as an equal, try not to hurt him but do not bow to every single whim of him as well. If you romance him long enough, you will know what I mean.
I was with both SH and Astarion in the whole Act 1. Then in Act 2 SH pulled back.
I think you should not reload. It should not affect anything. It is all roleplay in this case. it depends on what kind of character you play.
