Meta Magic
Can we talk about how OP quicken spell is/will be if they allow you to cast two levelled spells in a turn lol

It costs 3 Sorcery Points. I consider it one of the least efficient metamagics and in my recent playthrough I actually skipped it to get Extended instead (along with Distant and Twinned).

Can't beat getting an extra cast for 1 pt.

It also will cost you your bonus action.

Twinned spell does not work with spells which are already multi-target (Scorching Ray), or AOE's which are not pinpoint target only (Shatter, Fireball). So, quicken is still highly useful and likely will out damage even 3x twinned spell in many situations.

But it does work with Chromatic Orb, even though Larian homebrewed all but one of them to be AoE surface effects. I'd rather cast 6x Lv 1 Chromatic Orbs than 2x Shatter or whatever.

I think Quickened Spell would come in more handy with higher level spells, since I think the cost of Twinned Spell increases with spell level? So I'd probably say that they kind of break even when you're using it to cast a 3rd level spell or higher (which we don't have yet).

Quicken right now sucks. The only situation where you’d want to Quicken any spell over just Twinning a thunder Chromatic Orb is if you take a Warlock Magic Initiate feat at level 4 and want to burst down a hexed boss with double Scorching Rays. And that situation is incredibly niche. It could get stronger later on when you get more sorcery points and higher level spells, but that gets instantly solved by making it scale with spell level.

If someone wants to blow all of their unique class utility in a single turn and then turn into a crappy Wizard for the rest of the day, I say power to them.

I know, that's why I said it probably breaks even around 3rd level spells...which we don't have right now.

I just wouldn't waste Quicken Spell on a lower level spell, because you get more bang for your buck with Twinned Spell. Would you rather cast Chromatic Orb 3x Twinned (getting a total of six orbs) or Shatter or something twice?
Darkbrother Oct 18, 2021 @ 5:32pm
honestly it depends on how many targets you could get into the two shatters
Darkbrother Oct 18, 2021 @ 5:33pm
if I can kill 5 dudes with the two shatters it might be better. also the shatter cant not do damage if I hit 5 goblins I could miss some of those orbs they will all be dead if I double shatter even if they all save 2 times

I agree that alot of the time I dont want to invest that much resource but their are times when you need it. I kill like the entire goblin camp in those two shatters lol.

Quicken is overpowered only because Larian screwed up again. What a surprise there.

Quicken is only supposed to let you cast a leveled spell as a bonus action, letting you use your action turn to something else. IF you want to cast another spell during that action it can't be higher than a cantrip because of obvious balance reasons. This coupled with Larians interpretation of Haste(shouldn't allow a second leveled spell per turn) means that a sorcerer can cast 3 fireballs per turn as long as she have points to support it

Sadly though, that DOES use up 3 level 3 spell slots.

Whereas Twinning a spell doesn't use up an extra slot.

Twinning Greater invisibility, Twinning Enlarge, Twinning Haste, twinning Stoneskin... Those are probably going to be more efficient and effective.

Not that Quicken isn't a great Metamagic! But... Damn... twinning...

You cannot cast two leveled spells in a single round. If you quicken a spell, in order to cast two spells in the same round, one of them has to be a cantrip.

According to RAW, yes, but according to Larian, no.

And, I won't be single bit surprised if Larian will let us twin spell Fireball either...because it's so "cool". So that's 4(!) fireballs per turn. Sorcerer gets initiative....fight over.
