Destroy Petrified Drow?
They have an active health bar, but don't seem to react to being pushed, shot at, bludgeoned, or take spell damage?

if you cure them they get angry and you can beat em up i guess.

There's a potion that you can throw at them which removes petrification. I haven't seen a scroll or anything yet. They agro you either way.

That too. If you let the beholder it will eventually remove petrification on all of them. I recommend killing it long before it gets that far though. In round one it revives 2 and that's plenty.

You can use shocking grasp to kill them without curing them

I used a bludgeoning weapon ( forget which one ), but it did damage. Not sure why your's didn't work.

I hid in the corner off to the side with stealth, and the Beholder jumped right in the middle of my party. Shadowheart got a 50 damage hit off of her level 2 necrosis touch spell. Then Lae'zel jumped behind it, and struck it twice with action surge and a menacing melee attack to fear it. I killed it by turn 3. It was stuck on turn 2, rez'd another drow and jumped to the ledge below, but it had 9 hp at that point and it was easy to deal with.

After that I was able to solo focus on drow up above, and the fight got a lot easier.

I just had all my people stay inside the temple and lined up alot of the oil barrels outside and when he got near i blew them up and killed him before he ever attacked anyone

you could always have your entire party in the ruins picking up the oil barrels and have astarian down there and sneak down to where beholder spawns spawns, transfer the barrels and place them, back up and start the fireworks. instantly deal with the encounter :)

Kill beholder and the drows if any rezzed, after that destroy petrified ones with bludgeon weapon or similar spell. You get loot from them so it is good to destroy them.

Is there a story behind this or are they just XP?

One of the drows drop memory crystal, that leads you to adamantine forge when you use it, but other than that you just get basic loot from others i think.

I simply used my pet imp to kill all of them without agroing the Beholder. And you can damage them with 2h sword +1 or eldrich blast, but that will trigger the beholder cutscene.

I actually got a cutscene with two of the drow after I killed the beholder (but didn't kill the drow he un-petrified).

in the tavern area you access by killing the giant bartender in the shadow lands there is a basilisk oil that removes petrification

you only need to kill the named one for his drop. all the other nameless ones are just there for the beholder to unpetrify to attack you with if you take too long to take it out.
