The spore guys in the underdark have a mindflayer npc.
Yeah there is a mindflayer in the underdark in the fungi village. Good guy too. Though he shouldnt be a mind flayer he should be an illithid and have 6 tenticles not 4. In the lore only illithids were able to break away from the elder brain or show independence. It doesnt make a ton of sense that a regular mind flayer was able to break away.
When you ask him about it he answers that he was born with some magical capacities, which he shoudln't have (like his comrades), and that was what allowed him to escape the elder brain. So maybe he is not a illithid, but rather a mindflayer borned with a annomaly ?
Illithid is just the name for mind flayers in Undercommon. I think you may be thinking of ulitharids, which are sort of like the nobility of illithid society. But yeah the one being discussed here, Omeluum, claims to have been born with arcane abilities, which illithids see as an abomination. It was apparently able to use those abilities to break free from the elder brain's control.
There's a really good article on mind flayers, with a section on their relationship with magic, here: https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Mind_flayer
