Do shovels and ropes have uses?
I have been holding on to them because I am not sure if i will be expected to dig something or climb something with a rope. If they are just junk items then let me know.

Shovel can be used as bludgeoning weapon.

that's one thing that maybe they shouldn't bring over from Divinity... the shovel...

I would expect most tools and apparent ingredients to have more use in the full release. Here are some ideas / speculations including a few based on crafting containers that I have seen in-game:

Rope: Climb
Shovel: Dig into ground
Pick: Break through wall / floor
Shears: Tailoring (crafting with hides and coth)
Tongs: Blacksmithing (crafting with metal)
Hammer and Pliers: Repair armor and weapons?
Empty Potion Bottle: Alchemy (crafting potions)
Mushrooms and some Herbs: Alchemy (crafting potions)
Meats and some Herbs: Cooking (crafting enhanced food; larger hit point restore or buffs?)

Actually the shovel does have a use. If you use it at the tombstone near the sussar tree you'll find a dog collar. Then when in the ruined tower, there's a button on the 3rd floor if i remember right. Wear the collar as a necklace then press the button and food will come out. Presumably because the dog was trained to press the button for food or something and the dog was owned by the master of the tower.

That why Larian is so awesome in creating details in a game.
Now if they only could let go their DOS obsession and remove barrelmancy and increase Party size to make a oldfashioned DND game in modern technics

IIRC there's another use for the shovel. Something about a graveyard.

Shovel now has a legitimate use. There are places where a successful passive perception check will reveal a mound of dirt. You can then use a shovel to dig in that location and dig up buried treasure.
We need magical rope and shovels. D&D used to be known for the odd, cool magical item.

Shovel of Digging Your Own Grave. It digs twice as fast as a normal shovel, but every shovelful deals 1 damage to the person digging.

Trick Rope. This rope let's it's wielder cast the Rope Trick spell once per long rest.

Shovels do.
Rope (so far) Not so much from what I can see.
