Do regular sized swords exist?

From my very limited time with D&D I noticed that, as far as normal swords go, there are only shortswords and longswords. So for this game does that also apply, where there's no such thing as a regular-sized one-handed sword?

Its an english thing. Longsword is actually regular-sized classic sword.

There are shortswords, scimitars, longswords, and rapiers. I will say that the longswords are probably a little too big.

I assume you mean if there are Arming Sword sized weapons? Currently Scimitars and Rapiers seem to be a good scale of what a one handed sword should be like but nothing equivalent to an Arming Sword yet.

shortswords are actually short which is a nice break from tradition of many other fantasy games. They're appropriately sized.

That was literally my point. That in D&D a "Longsword" is a large one handed sword while in English parlance a Longsword is specifically "a sword used with a 2 handed fighting style". Which means a D&D "Longsword" is not actually a Longsword xD

2) A D&D Greatsword is a German Zweihänder not a Longsword.

I guess "longsword" would actually stand for "bastard sword", other known as 1 and half sword. Since you can use it both and one handed as a regular sword. Where great sword is 2 hand sword. But yeah, longsword is a regular sword in fantasy games :D

1) What are you talking about? Longsword (langes Schwert) is a 15th century German fighting style, and classification of blades used in that fighting style that spread throughout Europe. It's not a blade length classifcation or a grip style. It is the style where a sword is used in both hands.

2) A Greatsword is not a german Zweihänder... It, like every D&D weapon is not any specific sword. It could be a Zweihänder, it could be a Claymore, it could be an Elizabethan Longsword. it's just any generic 2 handed sword... And in 5e it's a little more specifically any 2 handed sword that's too heavy to effectively use 1 handed due to the changes to weapon handling from 3.x

Also for the record a Zweihänder or Beidhänder *is* a longsword...

TBC in 5e Bastard sword and Long Sword are combined into 1 weapon group called Long Sword.

Not quite. The D&D greatsword is just that, a greatsword. Real-history longsword don't even come close to the size of a greatsword. They are usually held with two hands but one hand is perfectly possible. A greatsword cannot, ever, be used with one hand.

1) Terminology changes with time.
2) Official D&D art depicts Greatswords as body length weapons, Zweihänder are body length swords ranging from 4'7" to 7', that makes D&D Greatswords Zweihänders.

i think the term "longsword" is less confusing then say broadsword
