There will be difficulty options later to make game better suit different players.
Our brains can look at individual components and combine them at the most opportune time to maximize its effectiveness this is the "Mechanics" aspect of the game, or those familiar with MOBA's the combination/timing of abilities. The A.I. cant do these as well as a human can. So Gnolls get more attacks, some enemies have more hp etc.
Also, Ettercaps, Gnolls, a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ drider, phase spiders, minotaurs, and Bulettes are not level 1-5 encounters, yet they are present here for us because they are interesting. Its hard but not unfair.
Ok, you are level 4, how many companions you have and what monsters are you having trouble at? What classes you have in group?
It's not an unbalance it's the actual game design and it works, being capped at 4 when enemies are 5 just makes it feel really unbalanced.
You are supposed to scout ahead cautiously, then take positions that roflstomp the enemy. If you cant get a good position, trick them to following you to a trap.
If you play without a single thief or stealthy char and no one can cast invis, use your pet familiars... they are great for sacrific... i mean scouting...
I beat the minotaurs and such underground with a single character by using the emerald fire trap at the gate. Didnt lift a finger to kill them unless you count lowering the bridge which you actually dont need to do. It was hilarious.
Emerald fire trap. You mean the shooting wall defense? I did not get xp when i used this, also this seems super cheesy in my eyes, since they kill EVERYTHING within a turn. (Though wonder what would happen if something that is immune to their attack comes. Prolly a true game breaking loop:D Since it is their shooting turn till they kill sg.)
Actually i miss REAL traps. Rangers and rogues were able to set those in the previous DND-s. I am unsure how it is with 5th ed, as in my language it is just coming out, and i did not order it in english. (That is only for Ravenloft themed stuff:D)
Basic set up. Rogue, Mage, Warrior, Cleric.
Gnolls are CR1/2 (but these are obviously buffed).
Ettercaps are CR2.
Mintoaurs and phase spiders are CR3.
Bulettes are CR5.
Driders are CR6.
So most of these (pre-BG3 buffs) are designed for level 1-5 parties, and I imagine a level 5 party would wreck a drider if it was the only fight of the day.
You sneak, watch their walking patterns then avoid to pass by, use the environment to your advantage, use your utilities (scrolls, potions, support spells, heals, etc..) and above all else you SAVE, SAVE, SAVE!! I ended up beating the whole game, completed every quest, killed all monsters both over world and under dark.. all being highest of level 4.. Just takes time, patience and the enjoyment for what you're doing.. I also made butt loads of bug lists and sent them all to Larian..
It took me an hour to wittle through them with my Fighter and Shadowhawk, Astarion was dead soon as he wet his pants, and Gale seems to like playing dead alot.
