I think only two character really matter in what approval level need to be at.
Shadowheart you just need good approval to romance (and depending on what approval you are at when early access finishes she might regret it or don't)
Gale you need to take his approval slow and camp alot because you need to trigger the Weave scene in order to romance.
2. When exactly the romance is initiated depends. Generally speaking there is a guaranteed romance scene at the Tiefling/Goblin Party, towards the mid-point of Act 1. However some companions, like Gale and Wyll, require you to initiate their romances prior to that scene. There’s no exact point where you can guarantee a romance, you just have to make sure you have high approval, see everyone’s scenes, and respond with the romantic options. It’s more similar to DAO than DOS2 imo.
2) Technically at the party since you are offered the opportunity to romance them in an intimate way. Some characters view this liaison in a romantic way, others do not.
Once you reach High approval with a companion, your characters' voice bark when selecting them turns romantic.
Some characters have moments where you can flirt with them and they are receptive back.
I didn't give him a book or let him drink, my approval rating is 3/10 and during the final party I was surprised by the fact that I could sleep with him, I'm really starting to think that this system is seriously broken
Is there a Gale Romance in the tiefling camp at the end of act 1?
Also, important point; for Karlach and Wyll you must make romantic overtures at the party following resolving the goblin camp situation. The others you can do then, before or after but for some reason those two are only receptive then.
