Do you need a rogue?
I usually feel limited in D&D games when I don't have a rogue, due to traps and locked content. With only 4 party members at a time in this game, do you think 1 slot is going to be mandatory for a rogue, or can you get by without one?

I can always use a rogue in my party because they're useful in combat too, not just for picking locks and traps. It's those darn rouge's I don't wanna see anymore!

They started coding some locks as "can't be picked" I think it's mostly for when they want you to do the story part associated with the actual "key" ... but perhaps this flag will be applied later to more advanced locks... and in EA they'd rather collect more event data than have locks stop people from exploring stuff and things and things and stuff.

Lots of people are saying slight of hand for this is 5E RAW (Rules As Written), but 5E RAW specifically uses Thieves tools for this, not sleight of hand.

You can get Thieves tools proficiency from background as one option so in 5E any class can in fact do this, Generally however you either want a good Dexterity/Wisdom build (usually ranger, druid or monk) or a class with lots of proficiency/expertise (Rogue or Bard) for covering these types of activities.

Overall in BG3, I'd say you could also easily switch a rogues job to any of these.

Yeah. Using slight of hand is just a homebrew thing. Generally the DM has to decide what modifier they want you to use for thieves tools. Most just find it easier to use slight of hand.

I quite after 2e and it sounds like they board gamed D&D into checkers from go. Still stand by that butchered the rogue class on that note, even if it was done in 5e, it doesn't make the stew taste any better.

If my memory serves me right didn't thieves suck in 2e and where generally terrible in combat? Pretty sure they made them better in later editions and more functional. They seem to have gained more than lost.

Thankfully 2e is over and we don't need to ocupy a party slot with a character solely for trap disarming/lockpicking and eating every potion and healing spell cause he dies all the time.
Now anyone can choose to be proficient with thieves tools, slight of hand.
