Patch 7 has FUBAR'd co-op and multiplayer
I was playing with some mods on Patch 6. Multiplayer with my buddy, who had like one or two mods. Differing load orders, not matching mods, everything. We could ALWAYS connect and play no problem, because we weren't using heavy mods at the time.

Patch 7 is the equivalent of Plankton giving Spongebob robot therapy. Us as players, jumping through all these new, not necessary before, hoops to share load orders and ZIP up mod folders and share mod settings, only for the game to say "nah, I don't really feel like it."

What's the problem?? I also feel like I finally get it going one night, and then go to play it the next day without touching ANY files and something is messed up that wasn't prior. Menu lag or something. I cannot comprehend and am wondering if anyone else is feeling kind of similar

No, your mods FUBAR'd, not Patch 7. Patch 7 is working fine... mostly. The Pathfinding is all ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up but that's all I've had issues with.

I get that, but they've added some type of protection in too. My buddy and I used to play with totally different mods and mod orders. That is literally not even possible now

It is possible, it's just extremely annoying. Some things may not work at all but you need to be able to assess that while building your mod list.

Patch7 introduced internal mod management. It was undeniably going to have an impact on mods. There are ample people still playing the game just as they were before, with the mods they were using.

They just had to jump through hoops for it since they didn't want to play Vanilla or use the supported mods.

That's just how modding is.

I've dealt with extensive modding for a long time. This is no better or worse than the stuff I deal with in other games from other developers in the first days since a new update/patch. There are always hoops to jump through so we can make Shadowheart's haircut not look like trash. That being said, I think the helpful thing in this instance is to specify what these hoops are. Do you know? If so, please share. Personally, my secret weapon is patience. There are plenty of other games to play in the meantime while more dedicated BG3 fans sort this out and post guides about it.

Ronny - I feel your pain. I like the game, but love it modded. The hoops suck, especially when it's hard to even find them. Hang in there.

Chaosolous - Can you shed any light on these hoops you're talking about? Anything specific would probably be helpful.

This is factually wrong. I feel like, for this statement, you are either purposefully lying to garner game hate for some weird reason (or troll people), or you both have a terrible memory with the mods you were using. I've been playing the game literally since early access release, the day it dropped. You have NEVER been able to play coop with mods, without BOTH players having both the same mods AND the same load order. Period. Fin. Go to the BG3 discord and ask if you can do that in the modding section, if you don't believe me.

There might've been some fringe cases -maybe- where you could've gotten away with it, but the vast, vast, vast majority of the time, that would NOT work and it has always been stated for both parties to have the same mods in the exact same load order.

I was able to use CYS in a multiplayer game without the other person having it. I thought you had to have the same mods, but when I loaded into his game the potion was still there and worked.... This was the beginning of this year.

Mods aren't the issue (well, they can be an issue if misconfigured), but the main problem is Steam Datagram Relay and its integration.

Make sure you and your friends don't have the following installed:
  • Epic Online Services: Is known to cause issues with Steam Datagram Relay ( https://old.reddit.com/r/fuckepic/comments/1fe1bp9/epic_online_services_appears_to_be_breaking_steam/ )
  • Any VM software (such as VirtualBox) or similar software: The additional network adapters they provide confuse Steam Datagram Relay.
  • Any "Game booster", VPN, "GPN", "Anti-Lag" or similar software: They either redirect packets via the kernel level or through virtual network adapters and confuse or disrupt Steam Datagram Relay.
Try unfriending your friends and use Direct Connection codes:
  • If you encounter NatPunch error 66, you will need to use a tunneling service such as ZeroTier and use the LAN IP that this tunneling service provides as a Direct Connection code. While this technically is a VPN, it's okay as a temporary measure for the SDR issues.
  • If you have a public IPv4 address, make sure UPnP works. If it doesn't, you will have to port forward UDP 23243-23262 manually.
  • If you know your public IPv4 address and forwarded the required ports (manually or via UPnP), you can use that as Direct Connection code instead.
If you still encounter 'connection failed' despite using Direct Connection codes:
  • Try loading a different save or start character creation, invite your friends into it using Direct Connection codes, then try loading the proper save.

Again, the vast, vast majority of mods don't work like that. There are some niche ones that you can get away with it with. But most, no.

Multiplayer is working excelent even after patch 7… so no worries.

It's not just you. Zero mods and Direct Connect has been the only thing that -sometimes- works

Did you update the mods?

That is your problem. After each patch the mod creators have to make changes so as to ensure that they still work.

This is why I waited for patch 7 so that you can get official mods and easily download / keep track / disable / delete them when you want. You played with fire by using random mods, chose not to turn of game updates and are now complaining about choices that you made.
