That is weird.
Did you pick up the quest at the Harper's camp?
Going through Grymforge takes you to an encounter that will replace the cult camp when activated. If you meet the Harpers before the cult camp, the camp will be empty and the Kar'niss encounter is triggered a different way.
To do the cult camp (and possibly save an abused Hyena in the process), you have to enter the Shadow-Cursed lands from the Rosymorn area, the Mountain Pass. You will not acquire the lantern immediately in that version. It will be taken away and returned later. (In this version, you'll need to perform an action to get the pixie. This can be done with a new ability that'll appear when holding the Lantern or from the Inventory regardless.)
NOTE: Don't use the lantern as a weapon! When holding a light source, it takes precedence as the melee weapon. This will ruin an opportunity now that helps in the Shadowcursed Lands and a sidequest later in Act 3.
If you follow them to the ambush spot, then talk to the Harper in charge of the ambush, the caravan will spawn (in a cutscene) and you will be given the chance to fight the drider and his party.
That's usually how I do it.
