yeah the desync of versions is such a killer. Me and my mate were going to start up a new game because he just recently purchased it and we couldn't play. Now i'm playing Zelda Echoes of Wisdom instead
Your friend could rollback and freeze their game version anytime, though.
Also there is not definite answer to your question, as in: there is no guarantee your game will be in sync soon and/or for long.
Would not be the first time Mac caught up, just for a hotfix on Windows to recreate disparity and Mac has to wait again.
Just have Windows user keep their frozen game version for multiplayer. That is by far the easiest.
