Issue with the investigate the murders quest

I have been trying to complete the investigate the murders quest, but I think I am permanently stuck.
As I understand, I need a password either by killing Dolor or by killing two of the vivtims (I don't want to do the latter, as I am doing a "good run").
I didn't kill Dolor at the wine tasting, and the game is now pointing me towards Figaro.
Problem is, that I warned Figaro way back when, I even have a line in the story progress saying: "We warned Figaro Pennygood of the Bhaalist target list list he's on-we should do the same for the other marked targets". My current clue says "We saved Cora Highberry from Bhaalist serial killer disgusied as a wine merchant. Figaro Pennygood is next on the target list - we need to find him before the killer does". And this is where I am stuck. Figaro is no longer at his home, Dolor is not there either, and online guides don't seem to recognise this scenario.
Is there any other way to get the password for the door, or do I actually have to kill some NPCs?

Is there a corpse at Figaro's shop - the investigator (Devella?)? If so, cast speak with the dead on it.
