Are BG1 and BG2 similar to Pillars of Eternity?
I'm new to CRPG, BG3 is my only experience. I'm enjoying PoE and I know it's much newer than BG1 and 2, but are their rules and gameplay similar?

Same overall style and setup. But they use completely different rulesets.

I really wanted to like Pillars of Eternity, but I found the rule system to be awful compared to dnd. PoE spellcasters wants to bulk themselves to steroid hulks because strenght improves spellpower. I found that one hard to accept.

probably should have asked this in the forums for those games no?

This forum is far more crowded, hence faster answers.

I noticed PoE pauses every time a fight begins but we can let it go in real time if we want. More or less. I prefer BG3 system. But my experience is too low to opine.

It is D&D turn based -- as in what each character can do in a slice of time, same as BG3. But mechanically, its RTWP.

And the simple 2e action economy meant that Bio didn't have to do much damage to the mechanics to make RTwP work

Combat in PoE 1 and escpecially 2 is peak, best in crpgs by far. BG2 combat is very basic and BG1 is a low level version of it where you barely have any active abilities on most classes. General game structure is the same.

They're definitely somewhat similar, PoE was meant as a spiritual successor to BG. The details of a lot of systems are different (especially in PoE 2 which got a bit more bold and better for it) but the general feel is somewhat similar

I'd like to add, however, that BG2 has a MUCH better story and characters than PoE games.

Eh, all comes down to personal preferences. Nowadays I'd prefer PoE (1) over BG2 any day of the week.

I'd give the plot edge to BG2 easily (though the dlc and PoE 2 sidequests and it's dlc have some good stuff) but characters is tough, PoE 1 has some great ones (and PoE 2 is okay but a bit behind there)

Similar and better in my opinion
