(SOLVED) BG3MM modsettings.lsx external reset (patch 6)
I deliberately am avoiding patch 7 for the time being, until all of the major mods I use have been updated. Even so, now, when I try to start the game out of BG3MM (going around steam and the larilauncher), I get a notification saying that my mods have been disabled because modsettings.lsx has been reset externally. Sometimes, I get this notification even before launching the game, after exporting load order to file. When I launch the game, my mods are all listed as missing.

Things I have tried:
- updating BG3MM to its latest version
- restarting my PC
- updating Script Extender to its latest version (via BG3MM)
- setting modsettings.lsx to readonly, both before and after exporting load order to file (was somehow reset externally anyway)
- launching the game on vanilla (loading an old vanilla save with all my mods disabled worked perfectly fine, though i didnt disable script extender or remove any native mods to do this) and then trying again with my mods back on (issue persists)
- setting my game to the patch 6 beta on steam

When I check modsettings.lsx after it has been externally reset, all of the mods i just exported to file are literally still in there, but they continue to not work in-game.

I have one friend avoiding patch 7 who has the same issue, and another friend avoiding patch 7 who does not.
My entire game was working fine before patch 7 was released, and I have not updated my game or any of my mods since then. Does anyone have any advice whatsoever? The only thing I can currently think of is just relenting and updating to patch 7, and dealing with the mods I'll be missing for a while, but I'm just so stumped!

- updating BG3MM to its latest version

latest BG3MM is only supporting BG3 Patch 7 and nothing else.

You need to go back to previous BG3MM version.

- updating Script Extender to its latest version
Script Extender always updates to the latest version, nothing BG3MM can do about that, or not do about that.

I'm that friend having the exact same issue. Also uninstalled and reinstalled the game, removed ALL mods, deleted the saves (after backing them up of course) and then put them back in.

We're on different continents with different PC setups and Em is the one who taught ME about modding. So the TS here is getting a little extensive.

Going back to BG3MM 1.0.10 seems to have fixed it for me!!! Apparently it had auto updated to .11 for some reason. Thanks so much!

Make extra sure to disable auto updates ^^ in preferences -> general , inside BG3MM, or you will get right back to latest version. Anyhow glad that worked out for you ^^

How do I revert to the previous Bg3MM?
You don't need to downgrade. Simply wipe folders with mods and remove modsettings.lsx. Then put mods back and run bg3mm. Adjust mods load order, export modsettings.lsx and in properties of this file tick read-only. Ignore error when game start. Mods will work, but you'll not be able to use in-game mod manager I think, only bg3mm (which is way more better).

Which files would I need to wipe? I really appreciate the help with this.

My case - in-game mod manager keeping disable mods/sort them in wrong order, keep resetting modsettings.lsx and due to this my save was broken. So I do this:

- I backup my mods and check updates for them
- I delete all mods, at patch 6 usually we've a Mods folder inside BG3 game folder
- I delete all mods from here "C:\Users\your_name\AppData\Local\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\Mods" (this is new place where game drop mods which downloaded through in-game manager stay)
- I delete modsettings.lsx file
- I put mods back to "C:\Users\your_name\AppData\Local\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\Mods"
- I updated bg3mm, install all mods and adjust load order. Then save order and hit button "Export order to game" which regenerate file with mods
- Then I go to "C:\Users\your_name\AppData\Local\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\PlayerProfiles\Public" and in properties of modsettings.lsx I tick the "read-only"
- Now, when game start I've an error about "modsettings.lsx can't be reset" or something like this but game can't enable/disable mods and can't sort them in improper way. Game run as usual.

Cons: Error every time you start the game, I'm not sure it's possible to install mods from native mod manager (I think you can download them, but they can be enabled only through bg3mm).

I don't think it's a perfect way but main problem with mods - some of them need to be loaded in special order, but game sort them out with internal "logic". Also game can disable some mods for no reason (or simply think it's "better for user"). And when you've heavy mods like 5e spells or modded class, which keeping disable by the game - save broke.

Hello, it was happening to me too with patch 7 and I managed to solve it by removing the "glowing eye" mod that contained a script, it may be some mod that is generating that error.

Yeah, forgot to write about mods which contain modfixer, they must be repacked without it, but it's easy to do.

So did we ever figure out a solution? Just started happening to me and have tried everything OP said
