So im trying to use command drop weapon however .. he only has crossbow, im not sure how to trigger him to swap to sword when even if you attack with minion or random creature or something he flys away instantly. has there been an update where this is no longer possible to obtain? thanks in advance.

From what I've heard, he randomly has the crossbow instead of the sword. Try reloading a save from before his encounter loads in.

I think Larian got tired of people using this exploit, so they changed his code to make it so he equips his crossbow rather than his sword.

I guess so, ive loaded the game about 20 times .. its always the crossbow.

Must've been something recent though, i could get his sword in my recent playthrough which is 3 weeks old or so.
However, i didnt use command but instead used a beastmaster ranger with the bear
