Regarding the type of mods, on the beta currently it's mostly name changes, dice sets, unlimited dyes. scrolls, the party extender, etc, haven't seen too many crazy mods like the one that turns the game into a rogue-like game.
Are there already any mods about adding races, classes etc...?
So you can add new items/races, ect. to BG3, but can't change maps or otherwise insert your own campaign into it, at least with the tools Larian provides.
And don't get your hopes up, this is WotC 3rd? attempt at a virtual tabletop and it always went bust.
Better check out less fancy 3rd party ones like Roll20 untill its actually released.
They are not restricting people to one or the other. You can use both their new official mod tool and still also use nexus mods at the same time. Just use due caution and discernment if you do as the company is not responsible for nexus mods.
