How is this possible? (Free the Artist)
I cleaned the haunted house to the top, and didn't find anybody there. Went though my quest log and discovered this...

Now I'm trying to understand what happened that the quest is finished. I've checked the older saves from this playthrough and it looks like the quest finished upon switching from act 2 to act 3.
Any ideas?

You did not buy his freedom, according to the journal. That means he got left behind in a place where you cannot get back and/or eventually died as slave while on the move to Baldur's Gate

But I cleaned up that cave... And spoke to him, so he said he's grateful that we saved him...

I guess he never considered himself freed unless you paid for him. Maybe worth to send to Larian Studios a bug report - though not sure if they still look into it.

send in your issue here alongside your savegame here

via email support@larian.com

only with your feedback Larian can fix it in the future :spacehamster:

Yeah, the journal clearly implies that a bug happen. "he left for Baldur's gate, yet you left him with the zhent" doesn't make any sense. Though i've seen the Journal say wrong things before though, like saying that I ignored Halsin even though he was back at my camp just fine.

Killing the Zhent should be a valid way of saving him, i'm pretty sure i did that the first time i saved him, though in that occasion i had to try it a couple of times because the zhent kept blowing everything up alongside Oskar, and in that case he did showed up in act 3 just fine.

Well something did not trigger a sequence of events in your game. I finished the quest successfully yesterday and up to Look for Oscar in Baldur's Gate, it's all the same. After that I have
From bottom to top :
1) Check up on Lady Jannath
2) Find out what's haunting the Jannath Estate
3) Incapacitate Oscar
4) Explore the Jannath Estate
5) Investigate the Atelier in the Jannath Estate
6) Talk to the Mystic Carrion about Oscar
7) Explore the Mystic Carrion's Mansion
8) Obtain the Torch of Revocation
9) Confront the spirit of Kerri Evenfield
10) Find Oscar to receive a reward

It might be a bug when upgrading to patch 7. Me I'm still on patch 6. Other possibility is you missed something on this list that triggered all the others. When I entered first time in the Estate,I got the Torch and the Mystic Carrion was dead. I spoke first to the butler to trigger 1).

Yea, this could be connected with the patches, cause I started this playthrough when the game just came out, and made several pauses in it. So may be multiple upgrades to newer patches caused it.
I had no chance to do any step related to this quest in Act 3. Found a save that is almost at the very beginning of it, where I visited the circus for the first time, and the quest is already finished there.
