Looking for advice on act 3 quest order (SPOILERS)
I've done most of the available side quests so I'm getting down to the meat of the end game I think. I'd like some guidance without TOO much spoilage as to whether some of these quests need to be done in a particular order that I've not taken into account. I just don't want to complete some difficult quest and then find out I've blocked myself out of what I was trying to do.

My current to do list looks like this:

1. Take the submarine to the iron throne. (Don’t actually have a quest for this because I just stumbled on it exploring the sewers, but I’m guessing some important allies are in that prison, like maybe Will’s father?)
2. Find and gain access to the Temple of Bhaal. (Orrin’s netherstone questline) I think I found it, but got the crap beat out of me when I tried to get in—but I was only level 10 then…
3. Steal the infernal contract from Rafael (found someone at the Devil’s Fee who will be get me to his house, though I haven’t paid her for the info yet)
4. Embrace Your Potential (necessary?)
5. Find a way to enter the artifact and free Orpheus (the Githyanki Warrior)
6. Deal with the Steel Watch (have not made any progress toward this…)
7. Claim the Crown (have made no progress toward this)

My goal at this point is to either destroy the crown (if possible) or give it to Mystra.

The constraints that I am aware of/anticipating in listing my objectives

I’m assuming that if I want to embrace my potential, I need to do it before freeing Orpheus. The other task I need to do before freeing Orpheus is gain access to the temple of Bhaal because I will want to get Laezel back for that quest. And I assume I need to steal the infernal contract before claiming the crown, and can’t claim the crown until I have all the netherstones. Are there other limitations I should be aware of, or is it feasible to go through my to-do list in the order listed above?

99% of the fun is finding out what happens if...

Any order you want.

As for me, I typically do pretty much everything in Rivington, then everything in Wyrm's Crossing, then attend Gortash's coronation.

After that, when you enter the city you are quite close to where you can pick up Lora's quest (if she is there). Do that by visiting the offices of the Flaming Fist. Stormshore is right there too, so if I have the cash it's a good time to donate to the gods. Elfsong is the next place you come to, so that's usually my next stop.

After that I just do things in whatever order I feel like, although visiting the House of Hope and Larroakan usually come pretty high in my priority. Good best-in-slot items all over the House of Hope and in Larroakan's vaults.

Forget Orpheus, it won't trigger before you get all the Nether Stones. Put killing Gortash and Orin for last. That's the way the game meant to be played. For the remaining, any order but the outcomes may be different depending on your choices. No goods, no bads here.

It was fun to read your OP; I won't fix some of your misconceptions. Spoiling you too much will ruin your experience. You must find it by yourself.

Deal with Cazador asap if you haven’t already and ascend Astarion. Best part of Act 3 imho

You will want to do the iron throne rather quickly, won't spoil it, but if you long rest too many times, something will happen at that location.

I don't think so but it must be done before another quest if you want to save all the Gondians. I did that quest late in Act 3.

OK, thanks for the replies. I just have been annoyed by feeling that I missed a lot of content. Halsin never showed up at my camp so I not only missed him as a companion but also couldn't satisfactorily complete a couple of quests in Act 2. And Jaheira got herself killed in the battle for Moonrise Towers, which resulted in missing both her storyline and Minsc's.

In particular, I'm worried that if I leave the Orrin Netherstone quest to the end, Laezel will die and I won't get to finish her quest line and the Orpheus quest will be less satisfying.

If you're playing honor mode, be prepared that some of these fights are really difficult unless you're prepared for it.

3 2 1 6 5 7

4 can be ignored, its personal preference really.

The one thing I can say that simplifies the feeling of how "overwhelming" Act 3 quests can be ... when it comes to warning murder victims for Investigate the Murders ...

You really only need to warn Cora Highberry, and if you stop Dolor there, that's it. However, he almost always dimension doors out, so you have to stop him at Figaro's clothing shop.

After that, the quest markers for everybody else you had to find and warn go away.

you can easily stop Dolor from escaping - Stun. Monk Unarmed Stun attack. easy.

There is a certain npc in the IT that will die if not rescued before the threshold of long rests is met. At least as far as I've been able to gather info on. One Duke Ravengard
