Invisibility?
The usual. Water, AoE, and such.
Though if you ambush him he usually has no time to turn invisible before dying.
OR you can talk to him with a charismatic character and... won't tell details, you may want to see that for yourself. You'll get the same amount of XP as if your were fighting.
If you really want to fight him and have a Cleric (Shadowheart), Spirit Guardians also makes inivisible creatures visitble again. Just walk where you think they are.
I'm not sure why it wouldn't make sense to do either of his suggestions. Helping Yurgir is no different to helping Astarian on his quest, helping Shadowheart on her quest etc. Helping Yurgir is betraying Raphael which wants Yurgir dead. Helping Yurgir you're basically putting a middle finger in Raphael's face which is the real foe. The 2nd suggestion also fits. With those dice rolls on a certain dialog path, Yurgir offs himself and the Merregon's.
Even a Paladin can use allies for future battles. Unless you're doing a solo playthrough.
Spike growth is pure gold on this kind of thing. Put it down in front of some sort of cover, get all your guys behind the cover, and wait for it.
I do not recall if there is anything to prevent a paladin from ambushing him.

You can take out all his minions before he can attacks. All alone he is pretty harmless. Also, you can block his area of control. That way his invsibility does not help him any to begin with.
I've never tried this, I play a Bard TAV on every play through and use the Persuasion chat dialogue option to avoid the fight....
