(serious answer: I think they just despawn, but I generally make a point of killing them for their stuff, so I can't be 100% sure they don't turn up later if you don't)
If you pass the rolls, you'll have to pause the game immediately after the cutscene. Enter turn based mode and target Baretha if you want the quest item and some loot. I remember doing this way back when so that everyone despawned but her.
It's the same thing with many NPCs. When you say goodbye to Mayrina, who tells you she's going to BGC, she (and possibly her zombie husband) wander a short distance, BACKTRACK as they run out of walking space, (it's funny to watch), and then eventually disappear.
Of course, she's incredibly daft, as the AI often is. One time I didn't deactivate all the gas traps on my way down to rescue her, and when she told me she was going up to visit Connor's coffin, she proceeded to walk through the gas clouds and die on her way up.
seriously, they should just stay there and bother everyone they meet just like before, while you 'assist' them by roaming around on 'patrol' for the artifact. Their vanishing act is a goof.
