Since you do not need to autoupdate the mods nor the game you are always safe from having your game accidently turned unusable, though.

Well, that is the nature of different versions with added/fixed content. Loading an older savegame with patch 7 converts the old data to match the new script, but the conversion is naturally a one way deal.
At least you can rollback the game whenever it is needed, even though rarely ever if you mod correctly.
