I use the Level curve mod anyway, so it matters not which they do either way.
Fits Karlach so much better thematically and actually allows her to use her racial smite spells while raging.
5e barbarian is sadly very 1 dimensional.
Two recent homebrew barb subclasses suit her: Rage of the Pit, and Hellcleaver. They focus on, well, getting fiery while raging (*). But as I've said, I think I like RoP's implementation over Hellcleaver's.
(*) More than just piddly 1d4 bonus fire damage from consuming a soul coin, anyway.
Storm Herald lets you surround yourself with an aura of fire while raging, but ehh, it still just isn't, well, Karlach, enough.
If you raise Karlach's STR high enough, she's quite capable of picking up and throwing people, even without Path of the Giant. Personally, I mostly have her throwing axes, javelins, spears, and such. I admit if you're a "pro" wrestling fan, there's something cool about watching her throw people at other people.
That fits very well thematically.
From a play style standpoint though I prefer abyssal.
The rage, claws, enlarge and quasit summon ability is fun.
At higher level the quasits can also be chucked like explosive footballs which is funny to do.
