That's for 1492 DR which is when the game is happening.

The map is fan made but is accurate for political boundaries as far as I can. Dimensions might be a bit off.

yep that is one good map out there. mind you for DND story setting, almost 99% of Faerun contents are set at the Sword Coast (e.g. Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Neverwinter, Candlekeep, Waterdeep)

the other area get mention like necromancy of Thay, but quite often the east side of the map don't have much official contents

Would be nice if we saw more of shadowdale, the bloodstone lands and Damara but given wizards performance with lore and books the last few years it may be a good thing we haven't seen them in a long while.

As for the far east, we haven't really gotten anything set there since 3.5

It's kinda sad that everything is in the sword coast, because it's a relatively small area. So many books and games take place there that you can't throw a stone without it landing n the scene of some legendary battle that decided the fate of the sword coast.

It's the same problem Star Wars has had for a very long time, insisting everything take place in a tiny span of time of the rebellion era. There's a movie or book about every week of that 17 years by now.

Star wars has more or less the same problem for the same reasons.

They had good writers in the old expanded universe who took the original time line and worked on it all the way to well over 100+ years after the rebellion.
Many of those stories were loved by the fans but when disney bought it they retconned anything that came after the initial rebellion and decided to do their own stuff most of which was very bad when compared to what they got rid of.

Looking at the D&D faerun they had a number of good writers over the years expand where the stories were taking place.
Sadly after wizards bought it a number of those authors left, then more left after hasbro took over as the company that owns wizards. (a lot of their good developers for the game also left in both instances)
And both of them more or less only want to push the sword coast.

The Sword Coast sells. Everybody knows Baldur's Gate because of the computer games. Put "Baldur's Gate" on a title and it's going to vastly outsell "Adventures in Thay" or "Exploring the Jungles of Chult".

Yeah, and Faerun is only a small part of Toril where the other continents are even less well defined. It's pretty sad.

Might be for the best in the case of Kara-Tur. What they have written up for that is one of those super cringey cases where someone has minced together China and Japan as if they can't tell the difference.

I mean all places are like that.. Faerun is a mixture of a bunch of European cultures, Zakhara is a mixture of african cultures, Maztica is a mixture of aztec/mexican cultures, ossë is australia, etc. And they are literally placed exactly like the real world map, they have 0 imagination haha.

Sure but the Faerun fantasy counterpart cultures are usually not such a tone deaf blend of two cultures.
