best dialogue is bard, many troll options
stealth gameplay and see lot of crit should be gloomstalker, assassin, with sharpshooter (stealth shoot, hide, shoot, hide. fun to see NPC keep try to find you)
big aoe damage, tempest cleric storm sorcerer multi class
Tavern brawler Open hand Monk is fun for just turning your brain off and punching everything to death.

Damage is decent, especially if you take a level dip in paladin for smite.
Expertise and number of skills you get is also very good.
But the sheer amount of ways in conversation bard has to screw with people is insanely fun.
Among the most powerful bard builds I have seen is 6 swords bard, 2 paladin (for smite and fighting style) then 4 thief rogue for 2d6 sneak attack, expertise and an extra bonus action.
It ended up having great control, amazing single target melee burst and good ranged thanks to extra bonus action and duel hand crossbows.
For feats it grabbed sharp shooter and a stat increase.
I haven't played tabletop D&D in a long time. Is Bard as good in 5e tabletop as it is in this game?
Not really.
Half of what makes it so good in game is the conversation options and the other half largely consists of tweaks Larian has done to the system.
So if you could convince your GM to use some of the Larian home brew and they are good about letting you pull stuff with deception/persuasion then maybe....
I will say the 2024 PHB improved them massively as it gives the School of Dance, wider variety of spells, expertise at more levels and magical secrets at a more accessible point.
But at the same time it also massively improved several other classes so.....
If you are more used to older editions I would suggest pathfinder 1e (1e is based on 3.5 and made by a lot of the devs who quit working at wizards) or 2e (2e completely redesigned the action economy and how buffs/debuffs work)
Bard there is an absolute beast and some of the sub classes are insanely good for a variety of play styles
• Damage - Cold/Lightning/Thunder dmg builds with Tempest Cleric and/or Sorcerer. Paladin Smite builds. Warlocks with Eldritch Blast. And then there's AoE dmg builds, multiattack dmg builds, etc.
• Control - Wizards and Bards excel at control due to their spell selections, but several other classes have some of the same spells. Bane, Hold Person/Monster, Confusion, Hypnotic Pattern, Counterspell and Cutting Words are the main ones to look for, but cold and plant based spells work rly well too (Sleet Storm, Spike Growth, etc). Oh, and Darkness falls into this category as well.
• Face of the Party - any class with high Cha will do.
• Skill Monkey - Bard, Rogue or Ranger, or any multiclass combo of those.
• Mix n' Match - blend several of these options together and/or build your party around a couple of these ideas.
For example, you might:
Build your MC as a cold dmg White Draconic Sorcerer, using Twinned Spell to cast Ray of Frost against Wet targets for dbl dmg and Sleet Storm for crowd control, and put one level into Tempest Cleric for armor/weapon proficiencies, twinned Inflict Wounds and a nice lightning retaliation reaction.
Recruit Wyll for Hunger of Hadar, make sure to give him Devil's Sight.
Later on recruit Minthara, but respec her as an Ancients Paladin and take her all the way to lvl 12 as a Paladin so she gets the extra 1d8 radiant dmg on every attack and three auras. Equip her with Ring of Regeneration and Whispering Promise to Bless yourself for free every turn - alternatively, use Warden of Vitality or just drink a healing potion.
Recruit Jaheira (or Halsin) and respec them as a Moon Druid. Use Spike Growth until you can summon a Dryad then the Dryad can cast Spike Growth and you can concentrate on something else, like Call Lightning or Wall of Thorns. Summon Elementals that deal cold dmg, and at lvl 10 you can Wildshape into a Water Myrmidon for more cold dmg. This synergizes well with your MC.
Now you've got layers of crowd control on top of high dmg - slippery ice surfaces, movement impairing thickets and darkness, and dbled cold/lightning dmg.
And you'll have plenty of space left over for utility and niche situations.
Bard
Personally, my most fun run was with a pure spore druid, built for area denial and terrain manipulation, with 2 short swords as weapons. By the second half of ACT II I felt like a god: the ability to deal ungodly amount of damage (on tactician) plus shutting down an entire front with a spell was exactly what I was searching for. The enemies literally marched on their death.
Adding the Sporekeeper armor in ACT III made me THE God of the Verdant Abyss: haste spore on a reaction allowed to cast 2 sunbeams per turn against Cazador. It went something like:
“What about sunbeam?”
“You’ve already casted it.”
“The first one. What about the second one?”
“…”
“Kamehamehaaaaa!!!!”
Close second I would say bard college of lore (have you ever seen a bard casting unlimited power?) for the mix of crowd control, pure martial damage and spells.
