So I play that Oath and if I do happen to break it, I accept becoming a Oath Breaker and go on and enjoy the run. You will still perform great if you break your Oath.
For multiclassing basics, feel free to use the information you can find here as baseline

Whether action surge is worth so much to lose out on the final two levels of Paladin is entirely your personal decision. It means losing out on the strongest attack skill the Paladin has, and a feat in return for action surge and a fighting style.
If you focus on using non lethal attacks/make sure not to forget them

then you should be fine, provided you understand a Devotion Paladin is akin to a lawful good Paladin who fights evil, keep their word, and never steps back.
A paladin is sworn to valor,
His heart knows only virtue,
His blade defends the helpless,
His might upholds the weak,
His word speaks only truth,
His wrath undoes the wicked.
So depending on your point of view, some people might consider it as restrictive, but so is the nature of oaths.
If you play the Dark Urge origin as Devotion Paladin, it is incredible hard not to break your oath. But you can restore it for a fair price. So in that regards the game is quite forgiving and playing Dark Urge is one of the best experiences the game has to offer. You can customise fully their appearance etc. - so you are not limited to play a white Dragonborn either.
Two easy to use paladin / multiclass builds which might strike your fancy

section Charismatic Allrounder Knight
and Paladin 5 / Warlock Pact of the Blade 7
The first suggestion creates and interesting mix where you can imagine a holy warrior who is also able to throw fireballs, while the second -mechanically similar- lorewise contradicts the paladin concept, but comes with unique boons too, such as three attacks per turn and synergies with the spell slots.
Take your time with the game and test out to your liking without worries. You can easily respec your characters.
And if you cannot decide between builds, you do not have to. You can always use multiple builds and respec your companions as well accordingly.
Enjoy your adventure.
