That said, the pathing and layout of act 1 is very odd and the order of doing things is like drawing a standard kid's star on paper without lifting the pen.
My act 1 optimal pathing is grab SH/AS/LZ/G near the ship, do the grove fight, go to blighted village alt entrance (climb vines), exit BV and jump to waukeens rest for the rescues and staff, light armor, and other minor looting then double back down the river to karlach and loot the vaults under the tollhouse.
Then minor stuff ... back to the grove, grove cave with goblins and statues, harpies, bugbrear soul coin chick, withers dungeon, and then blighted village and its special areas, hitting 4th level just as the spiders are in play, wrap up everything but the hag topside and off to the underdark I go... and that kind of pathing is not anything a new player would see or think to do but it gets specific items early and xp for doing little to nothing (like rescues and waukeens and talking down the gith for a level up)
all in all its a blessing that the map is relatively small and filled with portals.
as far as the encounters go, I agree that they stuffed in an awful lot of a 'tour of d&d' stuff, but that is also what makes it fun and exciting. Every few steps offers something, rather than days of walking with little to see (BG1).
Edit: Yikes. The OP isn't super bright, but I didn't see anything bannable there. Did something get deleted?
First time I've played I was sure it's some nature a village in ruins, some dungeon and the Grove. But on my 2nd playthough I found out that I missed half of Akt1. I was sure I was missing some stuff but thought it could only be just some minor stuff and side quests.
But I was very wrong.
Well @ the topic. It seems that someone is always unsatisfied of the map making. If you do too much diversity and different stuff people will not like it.
If they have did it like Bg1 where you walk 80% of the time over some Natur maps. Sometimes more trees sometimes less. People would complain too. (I'm not saying Bg1 was bad)
At least you don't kill Arch Damon's, Dragons and whole Menzoberanzza at level 3.
I must always laugh if you have to kill a full mature Dragon in a RPG in the 1st hour of playing.
OH LOOK TIEFLINGS AS IF THEY ARE A RACE THAT SPAWN OTHER TIEFLINGS ... OH LOOK LAZYASS-EL SAYS TEETHLINGS LIKE A BOTARD HUMAN WOULD WULL PUT DAT IN AND BE LIKE THAT ADDS CHARACTER DEP{TH... yeah not more like Tieflings are humans who's family passed a dormant gene that becomes awoken in like 1 person every few hundred years ... it's more of a sub race of human than things that can ♥♥♥♥ and reproduce other tieflings ... tieflings are HUMANS with active fiendish genes ... pretty much the whole story doesn't make ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sense ... a Nautaloid that wouldn't go to space where Gith and Dragons couldn't follow it...sure the Genius statted Mindflayers couldn't possibly think of such a simple solution... dragon's fire that doesn't burn a level 1 to crisp, but makes him flinch and grimace instead... magic is "booyagh?" WTF is this Warhammer? none of that's cannon.
Dumb as ♥♥♥♥ writers really... but the game mechanics are fun.
All this game does is invite another generation of lame D&D players to the table who don't care about the setting but really rather what big numbers they can roll...
And as the OP says, literally 15 second walk to different towns and areas as if they were too lazy to even make more than a few maps for a few zones .... OMFG THAT LOST SHIPMENT IS LIKE 20 SECONDS FROM YOUR BASE OF OPERATIONS ... can literally see the gnolls from the east gate exit ... tearing ♥♥♥♥ up ... huh I WONDER WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED TO THE SHIPMENT ... THAT CARAVAN I CAN SEE IS ♥♥♥♥♥♥ BY GNOLLS THOUGH, BUT YOU KNOW GOT BLOW UP THE BOTTOM OF A BURNT DOWN TOWN ... NOT MAKE THE WHOLE ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ TOWN ZHENT CONTROLLED CAUSE WE OWN IT NOW AND ARE THE MAIN OPERATORS OUT OF IT.... RIGHT NEXT TO A SUPER SECRET DRUID GROVE THAT 20 SECONDS OF SCOUTING WOULDN'T HAVE REVEALED ... OMG YOU LEAD THE GOBLINS RIGHT TO US AND WERE LITERALLY 20 SECONDS AWAY ON THE SAME ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ MAP!!!
Oh we gotta have a MAGE TOWER SO PUT SOME LAME ARACANE TINGYS DAT SHOOT FORCE BUT GET DEACTIVATED BY SUSSAR LEAFS BUT MELEE DAMAGE THEN RESURECTS THE TURRETS (literally says some ♥♥♥♥ like resurects / revives like I cast some holy spell to bring it back from the dead and can get extra 40 XP on top of the first 40 xp for killing it ...)
The game tries desperately to captialize on so many tropes it makes the story more like a mind numbing donk ass parade through deus ex machina central for every excuse why you haven't died yet ...
You're our savior to the psychic pootytang starwars dilemma of netherbrain...
Like bro ... face off against BG2 Mindflayers at LEVEL 15 PARTY and tell me how ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ almost impossible that was ... or if you got basic skills how impossible that is ... with a 6 man party ...
♥♥♥♥ ... here mindflayers with MINDBLAST AT WILL GET TAKEN OWT BY 3 ♥♥♥♥♥ ASS IMPS which we've ALL SEEN SUMMON QUASIT STATS WITH 7 HP THEY'd HAVE ALL BEEN ♥♥♥♥♥♥ TOAST BY ! MINDBLAST WHICH A MINDFLAYER CAN DO AT ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ WILL...
The game's story is a 7 at BEST mechanics ... 10/10
In every RPG it depends on how deep you are in the game to know how hard a mob is. If you meet Gnolls with level 20 im sure they are a much different experience then the level 1 version.
All in all i really like the story of BG3. Even better then BG1
Its something new and interesting. Yeah you got something evil inside you, is not new. You got that also in BG2. Just a bit different.
But i never thought that this "oh wait a sec. I almost forgot thst item here. I need to take it with me" is a micro dimension who keeps you alive all the way.
Sure i got it early that its more then "nothing" and when you find out everyone is searching it, i was sure its more then Shadowhearts side quest item.
But really i played almost every rpg out there since 1989.(played my first rpg on computer C64 there) And its hard to surprise me in rpgs. But BG3 did it here and there. And for me, that is some good storytelling.
I lol'd hard at your caps and censored words - but...you're not wrong.
BG3 is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of nonsense that serious DM's wouldn't tolerate at their tables.
It's saving grace is the 3D engine and just how much detail is put into designing the environments.
