Entering Mountain Pass and Moonrise Towers
When I tried to enter the Mountain Pass after dealing with the Githyanki patrol, I got a message saying something along the lines of, “This will progress the story. You should go back and tie up loose ends.”

So, I headed for the underdark and when I reached the elevator to Moonrise Towers, I got the same message.

I can’t tell if this is a point of no return, or if it’s just telling me my level is too low.

It isn't a point of no return, but progressing further will cause some quests to fail if you haven't finished them yet.
Just make sure you've done all the quests you want to do before proceeding, and you'll be fine.

It's a point of no return - and also, you're level may be too low.

I suggest going through the mountain pass first as its kinda like act 1.5 but the elevator in the underdark goes straight to act 2

Did something change relatively recently? This was never a point of no return before. Some quests fail if you proceed on without finishing them, but the act 1 areas remain accessible for quite some time after you enter Act 2.

And the OP may or may not be too low level, but the game gives you the same warning no matter what your level is, does it not?

For what it's worth I'd recommend doing the Mountain Pass before taking the elevator in the Underdark, and being at least level 5 or 6 when you go there.

it's not a point of no return. It's like you wrote in your top comment.

Point of no return is reached after you enter Moonrise Tower, you can still return to ac1, but you are warned not to do it.

I do both Underdark and Mountain Pass before Act II. I am usually level 8 when entering Act II and level 10 when fighting Ketheric. The only issue with progressing the story early is that the Grove related quests will all update and you won't be able to complete them.

You say that as though I know when Act II begins and who Ketheric is.

Act 2 begins when you either go up the elevator in the Underdark or finish the Mountain Pass and use the exit there. You'll encounter Ketheric in the act 2 story, don't worry about it too much. Sorry if I'm being a bit vague, but it sounds like your first run through the game so I'm trying not to spoil anything.

As someone else stated, Act 2 starts either after the mountain pass (It'll give you the same warning) or when you take the underdark elevator up. They're saying level 8 is a good goal for this time frame.

Ketheric I wouldnt worry about for you at this point, but there will be a place later called Shadow something (i dont remember) and that will give you a similar warning. THAT is the time you want to be around level 10.

Hope this helps and happy gaming!

But the mountain pass itself is still act one and therefore I won't bone myself by entering it?

I just cracked level 6 and I still have two or three side quests to finish in the nautiloid area and putrid bog.

Honestly, I'd just recommend making sure you've done all the quests you want to, then go to the mountain pass, for the short and simple answer.

The longer answer if you care is that the Mountain Pass is kind of a weird Act 1.5, where you don't get the Act 2 title card when you enter it, but the quests that will fail if you take the Elevator in the underdark (which *does* take you right into Act 2) fail as soon as you enter the pass, rather than when you finish it. That happens if you continue past either of the two places you get the 'make sure you're ready before continuing' warnings.

That said, if you're level 6 and playing the game normally, I'd say the odds are extremely good you've completed anything you might miss by going there anyway.

I'd say just go for it and plunge ahead if you wanna.
You can always go back to your previously explored areas with no issues, but like some folks were saying, some quests have a timer attached to them. After a few days, the game just sorta shrugs and resolves things one way or another.

Not to say this is always a 'bad' thing. No spoilers, but I avoided a particularly nasty fight once simply by letting a bunch of people die in this one area lmao.
There was poison gas or something, and you've got to get them free. I messed around for too may days (resting in camp) and eventually they all died and I was like "Oh.. oops."

Also, theres SO much content in this game that I highly doubt anyone will ever see or do everything in one playthrough.
Heck, I started a new save and rolled a new character, and i'm doing exactly what I was doing before, but the story has changed around me just based on my background, abilities, and how I talk to people lol.

If this is your first run, I say just do it, push forward, do whatever you wanna do and have fun. If you start dying a lot, then i'd say maybe circle back for some other things lmao.

taking the mountain pass will fail some quest if they are not finished but will not take you right into act 2. there is however a new area to explore and a few quests and items to be had in that area, taking the elevator in the underdark will fail the same quests but will take your right to act 2. now if IIRC you can get to the mountain pass after starting act 2, but i have no idea if it affects the quests in that area
