Act 1 and 2 waypoints vanished
I've just started act 3, and all my previous waypoints have disappeared. I was able to travel back and forth between acts 1 and 2, so i was surprised to be completely locked into act 3. Is this meant to happen?

Yes that is meant to happen, youre not meant to go back to act 1 or act 2 after entering act 3 (reasons being, youre on borrowed time and if you were to leave, the absolute aka the big brain could gather more power and overpower the Emperor)

Yes.

As you progress through the story, previous areas become inaccessible. There are three major points of no return:

1. Entering the Shadowfell at the bottom of the Gauntlet of Shar will lock everything from Act 1. Waypoints disappear and attempting to go back by foot will result in a warning and game over if you ignore them.
2. Travelling to Baldur's Gate (effectively, entering Act 3) will lock out Act 2.
3. Taking the skiff at the bottom of the Temple of Bhaal to confront the Netherbrain will lock you out of Act 3 and Camp and initiate the end game sequence.

When the game tells you you're about to lock out stuff, it isn't kidding.
