Question for Lore experts: why were Shar and Selune competing over Babyshart?
Why did Aylin know about her life history? Was this ever explained fully?

Shar and Selune are twin sisters who hate each other, so they generally love to pull a fast one when the other is involved. Shar always has some really twisted scheme brewing and Selune labours to undo them.

They've been at war since before many of the other Gods were even concepts weather it be through direct battles between their followers or subterfuge, and it isn't likely to change anytime soon.

As above on the contest.
As for Aylin's knowledge, she could likely see the residue of Selune on her and then got the details from her mother once she re-established her connection.

They weren't competing just over Shadowheart, not sure why you think so.

Kidnapping Selunite children was a favourite pastime of Sharran zealots. This wasn't made any better by the silly Selunite rite of passage, mind you.

In Moonhaven (Blighted Village, Act 1) you encounter some clues about this too, such as a list of missing children.

We also don't know whether Shadowheart was the one who Viconia mentions in her journal or just one of more that she might have abducted. I think Shadowheart was just a more appropriate target due to context (the wolf's curse, for example, there are a couple of books who reference that too in the game), but I doubt she was the only one who was subject to a Shar vs Selune show-off.

Yeah I’m aware of all that it doesn’t answer my question. I’m wondering if there is any explicit explanation in the game lore found in books or notes that I missed. It doesn’t make much sense for gods to compete over one child just for kicks. There is more to it than that. Aylin says Shart is special but doesn’t elaborate on why.

Shar's goal is to return everything to Her: To Oblivion. When Selune was in favor of bringing light and life to the universe, it upset her. Shar opposes every benefic god because of that. It's also why she encourages depravity and self-undoing.

She is the empty room. As she intends all to be.

Theres also lore that implies Shar and Selune may be two halves of the same essence. So what better way to "wrestle control from yourself" than by converting a Selunite to a Sharran? Both sinister and wonderfully petty.

There's nothing inherently special about Shadowheart, she just happens to be the one pick. She's special now, because Shar is grooming her to become her Chosen. But it really could have been any poor Selunite kid.
