And it's not unfair, there are crystals that you are supposed to hide behind to avoid damage. Also, Death Ward prevents oneshots. So does a Wild Shape. I believe you can also knock him out of the channel if you do enough dps, but I've never tried to.

This is what the wiki says. Apparently it works like that in Tactician too.
Ah well, guess I'm going for the cop-out approach.
They give you elemental resistance, not damage immunity. They're also pretty vital for blocking the nova attack, so I'm not fond on the idea of smashing them up when I could be directing damage at Ansur himself.
