Special companion dialogue in new areas
I just realize that despite playing the game quite a bit, I mostly didn't bother talking to companions outside of the camp.
So I'm on act 3 again, and talked to astarion, wyll, and jaheira when we got to the lower city, and they have a unique piece of dialogue about the city.

Is this common to other areas? If I had thought of talking to every companion while visiting, say moonrise or the underdark, would I have gotten unique dialogue too?

Some, yes. Act 3 probably has the most, as most of the party are from Baldur's Gate so have more to say, but there's a few bits and pieces, like Shadowheart in Grymforge around the Sharran skeletons for instance.

None of it is critical to the story or their personal quests, as far as I know, but yes, most areas will have unique companion dialogue where they give their opinions or insight. On top of that, it also happens after certain events or quest progression. Don't worry if you miss them, though, they don't have any impact, they're just flavour.

Some are automatically triggered without initiating dialog but require the NPC to be in the group at the time. If you have favorites that you use and always ignore the rest at specific points, you'll never hear those NPC+location-specific comments.

(I'm guessing that's why there's the popularity of the expanded party mod even though it can break specific transitions when the party is forcefully split due to the mechanics of the transition.)

That's cool. At least on future playtroughs I now know to try and talk to companions when exploring new areas.

Some of the dialogue is also indicated by companions saying something. Using the example with Shart in Grymforge near dead Sharran worshippers, she will say something among the lines of "oh, i recognize this armor". Usually single phrases lead to some dialogue from the character if you talk to them.

Oh yeah, I do remember some of these lines. I'll keep them in mind now. Thanks.
